Frequently asked questions
If your question isn't here, email us at hello@getsubletu.com.
Who is SubletU for?
Students who need housing for a set window — subletting near campus, or heading into a summer internship or program elsewhere — matched with students who have a place available for that same window, roughly 8–12 weeks. SubletU is starting with Villanova University students and is open to any student with a genuine term-length sublet or housing need.
How much does it cost?
SubletU's Villanova beta is currently free while we test the matching process. Future pricing will be disclosed before any fee applies — nothing is being charged or collected today, so hosts and renters currently arrange payment directly after being introduced.
Does SubletU verify listings?
No, not in the sense of formal verification. Every host submission is manually reviewed for completeness and legitimacy — we may ask follow-up questions or request a video walkthrough — but we do not independently verify lease terms, confirm the host's legal right to sublet, or run background checks. See our full Safety page.
What does "manually reviewed" mean versus "verified"?
"Manually reviewed" means a person looked at the submission and checked it for completeness and obvious red flags. It does not mean SubletU has confirmed the lease, confirmed the host's identity, or guaranteed anything about the apartment. We use "manually reviewed" instead of "verified" deliberately, to avoid overstating what actually happens.
Does requesting a listing book it?
No. Sending a request starts a manual review process. It is not a confirmed booking, and no payment is collected through SubletU today. A real person on the SubletU team reviews your request and, if it looks like a good fit, introduces you to the host.
How do I know a listing or a renter is legitimate?
Use the same judgment you would with any online marketplace: video call before committing, ask questions, and don't send money before you've confirmed details directly with the other side. See our Safety page for specific tips.
I'm a host — what happens after I submit my apartment?
SubletU reviews your listing for completeness and legitimacy, may follow up with questions or ask for a video walkthrough, and — once approved — manually publishes it to the browsable cohort and introduces you to suitable renters. See our listing form for the full process.
Can I sublet just a room, not the whole apartment?
Yes — listings are labeled as either a whole apartment or a private room with roommates remaining, so renters can filter for what they're comfortable with.
Is it legal to sublet my apartment?
It depends on your specific lease and building — SubletU can't determine this for you. Hosts confirm they have the legal right to sublet (including any needed landlord/board consent) before submitting a listing. If you're unsure, confirm with your landlord, management company, or co-op/condo board first.
There are no listings yet — can I still use SubletU?
Yes. Submit a housing request with your dates, area, and budget from the homepage, and we'll reach out as matching listings are reviewed. You can also list your own sublet if you're the one leaving.
Is my information kept private?
Information you submit is used only for manual review and matching, and processed through Netlify Forms (our hosting provider's form-handling feature) — see our Privacy Policy for full detail.
Is there an app?
SubletU is an installable web app (PWA) — you can add it to your phone's home screen directly from your browser, with no App Store download required.
